Iconography: Windows of LightJuly 4 – 21, 2012 The Program
St John the Glorious Forerunner The Windows of Light Iconography Program is a 17-day intensive course in the art of iconography, integrating the traditional method of egg tempera painting with the study of Eastern spirituality and tradition. Students will advance from blank boards to completed icons of St John the Glorious Forerunner (St. John the Baptist). This step by step instruction will help the student develop iconography into a life-long pursuit, provide a solid foundation for beginners and will help refine the techniques of more experienced iconographers. Through reading, lecture and discussion integrated with the technical training, students will explore the history and theology of icons, including the iconoclast controversy, symbolic meanings, and the scriptural significance of icons. While enjoying the support of a community of like-minded artists, students will also have the opportunity to participate in daily Mass, and morning and evening prayer. Personal time in the rural beauty surrounding the college complements this time of artistry and renewal. The course will close with a formal blessing of the icons, followed by their exhibition for family, friends and supporters of the students and college. University Option:This program qualifies as a university course, in cooperation with St. Joseph's College, University of Alberta. Students wishing to take this course for credit must notify our office at the time of their application. Additional fees will apply. The Instructor
